Getting a good focus with a manual lens?

When using a manual focus lenses, how do you know that your subject is in perfect focus and no further adjustments are needed? "Because I have a magical focus fairy whispering in my ear" is not a suitable answer.

With any properly working camera I've ever used that has a focusing screen or rangefinder, when the image in the viewfinder is sharp, it will be sharp at the focal plane.

Doesn't your camera have a focus magnifier feature?

When you make adjustments with the focus ring it will zoom in on an area of your choosing, allowing you to see if it is properly in focus. I didn't know this existed either until I got my A7R5 a few months ago. Absolutely love that feature.

It goes back a lot further than that. My Sony A77 II, Nikon D7200, and Pentax KP all have it, though it's not automatic like you describe.

Actually, the magnifying glass was invented long before photography.

Live view and focus on what you need to be focused on.  Or am I missing a part of your question?
