Are you offering discounts to repeat clients?

I ask this every so often just to keep on top of what the masses are doing.  I get asked a lot from my wedding and portrait clients on discounts, from my fees down to the prints I sell.  I typically don't.  But know that I've lost some business from this.

2023, are you offering discounts to repeat clients?

Not something I advertise or make known.  Have I ever? Yes, under certain circumstances I have.  But when I have given discount, it's usually hasn't been more than 10%.  One time, I just offered discount from my profits from the prints that had been ordered.

Yes, but depends on the client.  Never exceeds 10%.

Yes, but there are some factors to consider:
  1. Your pricing strategy: Before offering discounts, make sure that you have established a clear pricing strategy that takes into account your costs, time, and the value of your services. Your prices should reflect the quality and expertise of your work, and be sustainable for your business in the long term (not to sound basic, but putting this out there for many others that might be just getting started and considering discounting).
  2. Your target market: Consider whether your target market is price-sensitive or not. If your potential clients are more focused on price than on quality or the experience you offer, discounts may be a more effective way to attract their business (but beware this is a slippery slope).
  3. The timing and frequency of discounts: Offering discounts too frequently can devalue your services and create an expectation of lower prices. You may want to consider offering discounts only during slower periods or for specific services, rather than as a blanket discount for all clients (again, beware this is a slippery slope).
  4. Your competition: Consider what your competition is offering in terms of pricing and discounts. While you don't want to underprice your services, you may need to adjust your pricing or offer occasional discounts in order to stay competitive. ***super important, understand your competitors and what they are doing to your target market and consider how you want to position yourself***
Overall, offering discounts to photography clients can be a useful tool to attract and retain customers. However, it's important to consider the implications and carefully balance your pricing strategy with your business goals. This is likely a little different then what you were expecting for an answer, but I thought I would approach this from another angle. Hope this helps!

Have I?  yes.

Is it something I offer regularly?  No.  It's been a couple times I have moved from my normal pricing.  Just normally a hard line in the sand.
