What does "fine art" photography mean?

Hey! What makes a photo "fine art" anyway? Who gets to say, "Yep, that's a fine art piece"? I've been looking at some online, and they're super impressive, well some are. But how do you tell the difference between a cool pic and a "fine art" one? Who's the judge?

The photographic community typically would label images and art as fine art.. One can not place this label or tag on their own image. Fine art represents a particular image quality as well as subject matter.

Flickr has several "Fine Art" photography groups with various themes. One is dedicated to Fine Art Dog portraiture .

"Fine Art" photography is whatever you want it to be.

FYI, only the original photographer can submit a photo to a Flickr group, so people can call their own photos "Fine Art" by submitting them to a Flickr group.

If someone wants to call their snaps fine art, we can not stop them, but we know it is lacking.

If someone calls their painting that looks like paint by numbers art, that is their prerogative, but no-one will buy.

I think a photo needs a social message to hang in an art gallery. And it needs to be accompanied by ten or sixty more in the same style and message.

:agree:  Well said!  I know two photographers that title their own photos as 'fine art' and honestly, far from it.

The question of “What is art” has been debated for many many hours all around the world for centuries.
The goal post is shifted regularly.
When the computer came, was things created on the screen art?
When digital photography came, is a manipulated photo still a photo for art?
Now AI is here. Magical images can be created, but who is the artist, the commander, or AI?

Fine art photography is a form of photography that is created primarily for its aesthetic value. Fine art photographers use their cameras to express their creative vision and to create images that are both visually appealing and thought-provoking.
