ISO today from a how it works standpoint changed over last 15 years?

I hope I can explain what I'm wondering:  When you look at computer processors and how they have evolved over the last 15 years, or if you look at memory cards and how much smaller and faster they have become over the last 15 years.  Now with those two examples, has ISO improved from a technological standpoint?

I agree. The camera manufacturers went to considerable trouble to make digital cameras work as close as possible to film cameras, but since, the technology has been improving, cameras can handle now much higher ISO settings, making them work much better in very low light conditions. This should get even better as the technology advances over the next 20 or more years. A very good reason not to keep your camera forever, but a new one every year or two isn't necessary either, unless your choice of photo work is pushing the limits of the best camera available. Only then, will it be worth a new camera this often.

Gotcha, thank you.   So it's still the same from a mechanical or technical aspect.  It's the tools (like sensor) that have improved.

Correct. ISO is a standard. Sensors and processors have improved so much that we can shoot at higher ISO numbers and get a good image, but nothing has changed with ISO in and of itself.
