The use of 7" diameter grids when using Studio lights.

I have done this forever, and had a couple of sets of these honey comb grids to use in my 7" diameter studio flash reflectors, but they were 20, 40, 60 degree sizes. I recently found and bought a couple of sets with 10, 30, and 50 degree sizes, but had never used them, until yesterday.

I started setting up for a "still life" shoot on a 34" square table and red table cloth. Then added a slender flower vase and 3 roses to the vase. At this time I planned to add more, but decided to start working with the lighting for this photo shoot. First was a 400 Watt / second Godox SK400 studio strobe. Then I added a snoot to it, which contains a small diameter 60 degree grid in the end of it because I thought this would light just the roses and not everything else. I was a bit surprised that the snoot didn't narrow down the flash anywhere near as much as I had expected.

So, what to do? Then I remembered these 7" diameter grids that I recently purchased, and took out the smallest grid that I had, a 10 degree size, and placed it in the reflector of the SK400 studio strobe. Perfect! I now had the narrow beam that I was looking for.

I've attached one of my "Test shots" to show the results, since I plan to add more "Props" to the final shot, but I decided that you all might like to see the result from this 10 degree grid . I guess I'll be reaching for these grids a little more often in the future. The 20, 40, 60 set has their uses, but for this they have never been quite good enough. Great for backdrop lighting though. These new 10, 20, 30 grid sets are going to see a lot of use here in the near future.

Well, the forum has decided to change the orientation. The time to edit the photo ends too quick to be able to make the selection. Can an Admin please rotate this for me?

Thanks
Charley
