1" sensor the largest available?

When it comes to sensor size, is 1" as big as it gets?  If it is, why hasn't there been a larger sensor made?  Doesn't sensor size impact resolution?

Absolutely there are sensors larger that 1".

'Full Frame" cameras have image sensors that are ~1x1.3 inches, and "Medium Format' camera sensors are even larger.

FYI, 1" image sensors are only 13.2x8.8mm.

The larger the image sensor, the more photoreceptors it can contain, so larger image sensors are capable of greater resolution, but that doesn't automatically mean that a larger image sensor means greater resolution.

For instance, Sony's $3,500 'Full Frame' A7S III has a 12MP image sensor, while Sony's $1,400 APS-C A6700 has a 26MP sensor.

From Wikipedia :

"Sensor sizes are expressed in inches notation because at the time of the popularization of digital image sensors they were used to replace video camera tubes . The common 1" outside diameter circular video camera tubes have a rectangular photo sensitive area about 16 mm on the diagonal, so a digital sensor with a 16 mm diagonal size is a 1" video tube equivalent."

Great question about sensor sizes! Actually, 1" sensors are not the largest available in the camera world. There are several larger sensor sizes, such as Micro Four Thirds, APS-C, Full Frame, and even Medium Format, which are commonly used in both consumer and professional cameras.

The reason for the variety in sensor sizes is due to a balance between cost, image quality, and the intended use of the camera. Larger sensors generally offer better image quality, particularly in low light conditions, because they can capture more light. This indeed impacts the resolution and the overall quality of the image, allowing for more detail and less noise in the photographs.

However, larger sensors also make the camera system larger, heavier, and more expensive. This is why you don't always see them in all cameras, especially in compact ones where portability is a key factor. Manufacturers try to find a sweet spot that appeals to their target audience, balancing the benefits of a larger sensor against the desire for more compact and affordable cameras.

Yeah, so to close this off, there are definitely larger sensors than the 1" type, each offering their own advantages in terms of image quality and resolution. The choice of sensor size is often a matter of balancing various factors, including image quality, size, weight, and cost.
