Photographing 2024 eclipse from plane?

2 months 1 day ago #761690 by Sanford
Southwest and now Delta are offering flights specifically around the 2024 eclipse.  Marketing these flights around such solar spectacle, how would such a flight benefit photographers looking to cover the event?  Not like you can get good shots from inside the plane and through those little windows?

So the trick to this is being on a plane that is newer and the windows aren't all scratched up.

You should also have a plan in place to block all of the plane's interior lighting from reflecting off the inside of the window and into the camera lens. They make big floppy rubber lens hoods for this. You place it on the camera lens and the front of it against the window. Then you can shoot through the window without getting any effect from the cabin lighting. The floppiness of this hood will allow angling the camera as needed.

My brother is doing this so going to be interesting to see what sort of photos he is able to get.  He asked if I was interested in going, wish I had the time, but not in the cards for me.

Be prepared to maybe bribe (not necessarily with money) the pilots to get the ideal positions for the desired shots. They might be willing to do it for you without the bribe if you share your ideas and need with them before the flight. Will this be an airline flight or a private plane?

When my son and I had the Piper Cherokee Arrow airplane it was fun to fly high (3,000 ft +) on the eve of the 4th of July where fireworks displays could be seen almost everywhere below us. Never tried watching or photographing an eclipse from up there though.
