I also only have one lens, but I do not want to be carrying a camera and a big lens hanging off my neck in the middle of as church.

70-200, easy to carry, I can get the shot I want and it's not too big to be extremely noticeable.

17-35 for a wide shot of the venue, then 24-70 for general shots and 70-200 for close ups.

AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8D, horrible light in church.

It is what it is.

I'd go for 14-24 2.8 for wide shots (I like the look of 24mm and 14mm would give you a nice majestic shot if the church interior is nice). 24-70 would be OK too.

70-200 2.8 for the rest OR 85 1.4 (if I owned one)

If I had to choose just one lens, I'd go for the 70-200. You could get away with something like a 35mm and a 85mm that would probably work. It would give you low light and shallow DOF capabilities too.

My churches around here are old-school catholic types with NOOOO light. I use an 85 1.8 and a 50 1.4 and am still shooting around f2 at barely hand-held speeds. The 85 on a crop sensor is nice because you can get some more intimate shots without being in too close.

I don't do churches, but if I did, and if it wasn't a wedding, my 18-135, mainly because I am not carrying Bigma.

I would use something with the lowest f/ stop and bump up your ISO to insure you get a good shot.
