What camera to get my teenage daughter?

13 years 2 months ago #30668 by Cappy
My daughter wants to seriously get into photography. For her 16th birthday, I would like to get her a DSLR, but I am not sure what I should get her. I was thinking of giving her my Nikon D90 and buy myself an upgrade. Or would the D90 be too much camera?

I say, give her the D90 and you upgrade. The camera may be too much at first for her, but she will grow on it, if she seriously wants to do photography.

Be careful. You know how teenagers are. They don't want what you have. They want something bigger and better. In this case, don't get her something bigger and better. She needs to start somewhere.

Isn't that the truth. Well I think she would appreciate it, because right now out of all her friends, she would be the only one with a DSLR.

The D90 would be good for her as you know it well and would be able to teach it to her and troubleshoot for her. It is a good DSLR and will give her room to grow as a shooter.

I agree with Rob. Give her the D90. You upgrade. And you can teach her photography. One more father daughter bonding experiance.

I too will chime in for giving her the D90. My grandfater gave me one of is old 120 cameras when I was a kid as my first and I was glad to have it.

I'd make sure it's not too large for her hands & if it isn't, then it's a no brainer. If on the other hand, it's too large for her to handle comfortably, you might have to consider a smaller model (she could still share your lenses & other gear)...
