I'm looking to buy a lens for concert shooting. Are there any recommendations? Any info would be greatly appreceated.

Even at F/2.8 you'll have to use high ISO speeds to get shutter speeds that are hand-holdable, let alone that will freeze the action of the performers. It's doable at F/2.8. What gear do you currently have?

The 85mm macro would be fast enough but you would need a zoom lens.

The 18-55 is a kit lens right? That won't help you one bit.

Yes it's a kit lens.

There is a 70-200 2.8, that would probably work.

Duco has got it right, I have shot some local shows (nothing very fancy) but used my prime lenses (85mm 1.8 & 50mm 1.4) and still have had the ISO at 1600-3200 with barely hand holdable shutter speeds with f-stops around 2. In my limited experience there is a pretty wide range of light on stage, lead singers usually get pretty good light drum players and other musicians may not.

Hi there,

as concert photography is my main field I thought I'd share some details myself :)

Firstly, it depends on your budget. Then comes how far you are from the stage.

A perfect lens would be a midrage zoom lens, preferably a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM. Although costly, you will never regret it.
A good alternative to that is a cheaper lens, the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8.
Both are fast and will do the job.

If you're really close to the stage, an awesome lens to have with you is Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 which is super fast and I use at a lot of the shows I shoot. It's Canon's cheapest lens yet extremely useable.

Moving on, a lens like a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM is ideal if you're far from the stage and if you have the money for one.

Anything slower than F/2.8 will make your work more difficult. Remember to pump your ISO for good results, depending on your camera of course.

If you're interested you could take a look at my work here: www.savvasproestos.com/

All the best! :)
