Anyone know how I can speed up my shutter past 1/200 when using SB-800 flash?

So I was just trying out my 105mm lens with some water photography at the kitchen sink. I've seen photos online where people get really cool shots slowing things down, including water coming from sinks. I need to use the flash to get enough light for correct exposure and fast shutter, however my flash will only go up to 1/200 sec? And you don't get the results you wanted? I need faster shutter speeds.

Any suggestions please?

Here are a couple photos to show what I'm talking about. The colors were achieved by putting red or green tint in front of my flash.

Easy, just shoot in manual and move up the shutter speed. You will have to shoot a bit wider then normal and just crop the top or bottom of the photo. because the flash will not get there. you can also shoot in high speed sinc but it you will lose a ton of flash power.

A lot depends on the flash sync of the camera. If you exceed it, the shutter may not be fully open when the flash fires. I learned that the hard way back in the late 60's when I started out in photography, shooting (not a paid gig) a friends wedding. I had several shots where a portion of the frame was black & the rest was properly exposed....I use a D70s now & that camera can sync up to 1/500th. Great way of blackening out the background of macro shots with background clutter.

You guys are great, thank you! Now how do I move my camera into high speed sync? Right now, in manual mode I try to move beyond 1/200 and it won't let me? What do I need to change?

Thanks again :)

Not sure which camera you use, but look it up in your users manual (I know they tend to be confusing, that's why I recommend the "Magic Lantern" guides for people)

I have a Nikon D80, and honestly I have no clue where my manual is. Magic Lantern? I will need to track one of these down. Again I really appreciate your help!

Try going on Nikon's website for a PDF copy of the manual...Here's a link to your specific question on a Flickr group

BTW, I moderate a group on Flickr about using non metering lenses (manual focus)on Nikon DSLR's

Thank you! BTW do you know how to "trick" the camera so you can get up to 1/4000 sec shutter with flash?
