When it comes to macro photography..

Which lens is better to have to get as close as possible... 50mm, 65mm, 100mm or 180mm?
These are all macro lenses.

Don't worry, all those lenses will get you the same magnification, which is 1:1. However, if the 50mm you're considering is the canon f2.5 compact macro, you're looking at 1:2 ratio, which isn't as close.

There's three major things that come to play with macro lenses of different focal lengths. One's a PRO, the others are CONS.

PRO: The longer the focal length, the farther away you can be when you shoot the subject. The 180mm sigma and canon macros are a favorite among insect photographers because you can shoot from a very comfortable distance and not scare the insects away. 100mm is also very decent.

CONS: The longer the focal length, the shallower the depth of field. Also, like any telephoto lens, increasing focal length pronounces shakiness in hand held shots.

I've never used a macro lens I didn't like, but my opinion is if you want a good all-around lens, the 100mm is a great focal length. 180mm is good if you want to specialize in insects (expensive though). 65mm and 50mm will get you the best depth of field, so they're good as a walk-around lens or for product shots.
