How to get a black background?

What would you say is the best technique to get the picture with your subject on a black background, without it being obvious that the picture wasn't taken in front of a back drop? I have been messing around with stuff in PS and it's just not working out.

You have to take the picture so that the background is black...otherwise yes, it will look either "fake" or be very time consuming

You can just shoot outdoors at night. Light your subject as you would anything else in the studio.

Thanks but I was hoping to find a way to create a black background in PS without it looking fake.

You could always use high speed flash sync, and crank up your shutter speed and go with small aperture.
