Day to Day Portraits

13 years 3 weeks ago #49608 by Zezzer
Has anyone followed a person around for a whole day (or most of it) and took pictures of that person doing whatever they want?

I was recently contacted by a lady wanting to have some day to day portraits done. Her ideas were shopping in the mall or a grocery store, bowling alley, car wash ect. Just her doing everyday things. Although many of these places pose issues such as lighting, there are other issues such as, can I even shoot in these locations without prior permission, how exactly to light someone well while they are walking through a florescent hall. How much do I charge for this kind of day? I plan to burn pictures to CD. Any ideas, suggestions, past experiences, all would be great to hear.

I don't think many places would have much of a problem if you asked management beforehand if you could do a quick shoot.

I think it would be very interesting to follow someone around for a day and take pictures of their life.

You definitely have a lot of challenges. I would be most concerned about the permisions. As for the lighting...it is what it is because it's NOT controlled and so it gives that candid feel. For that stuff I use a really wide aperture and no flash--even if it means high ISO. I might suggest shooting RAW since you're lighting will be all over the place and it's not always easy to remember to adjust the camera plus you can inject some drama with changes in contrast lighting & color.
As for charging...by the hour perhaps. It's basically what I'm doing since I only deliver digitally and so I don't count shots or anything. Good luck and keep us posted.

I can understand how using a flash would assume candids, but I wouldn't be against using flash...as long as you know how to use it correctly, that makes a big difference. Let us know how it went. Would love to see the pictures.
