Using Flash on Babies?

This was brought up once in one of our Professional conventions and it was said it is such a short burst of light that it shouldn't affect babies. All babies get their photos taken from birth on up and flash is used all the time and I have never heard that their eye sight was ruined because of flash. But guess you can ask an eye dr.

I personally don't use the flash simply because of the startle factor and because I don't like the look. It never really crossed my mind that it was thought of as an issue.

maybe show her how to set the baby up near a window, or make a bounce or diffuser for her flash. That may satisfy her concerns and still improve the pics.

My kids have been flashed on an almost daily basis since the day they were born, and they can still spot a M & M at 500'.

If flash is a real issue turn off the flash & move the baby closer to a window for natural light. I usually just use a longer exposure.

It may be one of those things that perhaps it wouldn't cause physical damage to the eyes as much as it may not be recommended; babies that young aren't yet able to use both eyes together well or see at distances. At least it would probably not be a good idea to use a flash too close to a baby's face, esp. one that young. If nothing else I would think it could be distressful for a baby, it probably depends on the child, but they don't process sensory input the same as an older child/adult. Something that would be a normal amount of stimulation to an older child/adult could be overstimuating to an infant.

Here's an article that halfway down the page touches on vision and play w/babies - www.zerotothree.org/child-development/pl...ing-with-babies.html ; Zero to Three is a site I used at work as a resource.

I think it comes down to what the parents are comfortable with; if they don't think it's a good idea then it might be better to wait til the baby's older.

And I'm retired from this now! - didn't think on here we'd be talking birth to three development. (But then again on this board what don't we talk about? LOL)
