Using Flash on Babies?

12 years 10 months ago #97277 by 2myboys
My sister just had a baby (a month old) and is convinced that flash is bad for the babies. THEN, she wonders why the pictures are always so dark and out of focus. Is the flash really THAT bad for their eyes? I've been taking pictures of my 2 boys since they were born and well they didn't complain.

So I thought I would ask the experts...is flash bad for babies?

Bounce or direct? I could see direct flash being harmful. It can be painful depending on the power used.

I imagine it would be direct, as my sister only has a point and shoot with the pop up flash.

Hmmm is anyone a nurse or a dr on this board to know for sure if the flash is harmful?

Call Child Protective Services and turn in a anonymous report of child abuse by flash. If they snicker it is OK. If they want to know who is doing this turn in an enemy...

We are not the experts you need. Call her pediatrician or optometrist. Considering that my top of the line, as powerful as speedlights get flashes can't even match the intensity of daylight without being right on top of the subject it seems unlikely.

Remind your sister that professional photographers have been taking pictures of babies using flash for a very long time. If the flash was harmful to babies, there would probably be a law/rule about it. I am sure without a doubt it would be in one of those baby books that mother's always buy when they are expecting.

I worked as an Early Intervention Specialist w/babies and toddlers (education not medical field) but I understand it is harmful for a newborn up to a certain age. Maybe your sister can ask her pediatrician at what age the baby's eyes are developed enough for it to be OK. Their bodies are much more senstive to things than an older child/adult; something we could tolerate could be overwhelming for a baby's central nervous system.

MJ no wonder your daughter makes faces or whatever when you try to take her picture LOL - I'm kidding I think there must be a lot of fun in your house. And leave it to Chas to be a big help!

One thing I've encouraged parents to do is to trust their instincts, they know their child best. It sounds like that's might be what your sister's already doing.

So maybe she should just ignore all of us and go call her baby's Dr.! Now if she has a question about how to photoshop a macro image of a bug using a re-formatted memory card, etc. etc. then she can ask this bunch!
