Let's talk about flash and exposure compensation for a minute

Good morning everyone.

So I was thinking, when you are using a flash... really what difference is there whether you use flash compensation or exposure compensation? Either one should give the same results right? Yesterday I was reading up on the two. Is that right? One determines how strong the flash output which ultimately determines the over all photos exposure... right? Or am I missing something?

LIke sharpening a photo. There is much more to it than that.

When using a flash you are making two exposures at once, and it is how you balance the two (flash with ambient) whether it looks good or not.

There are also two different methods for using a flash, and each requires a different approach. One is flash as the main (or KEY) light and the other is flash used as a fill.

It depends what look you are trying to achieve. And even then its a matter of taste.

Matthew :)

PS how are you using your flash, and I can get you started in the right direction.

Exposure comp affects aperture, shutter, and/or ISO settings depending on what exposure mode you are in.

Flash comp affects flash power.

If I am shooting a bride in white in Av, and I adjust exposure comp to +1 then my exposure will be adjusted in a way that also brightens ambient light in the background. If I set flash comp to +1 then only the flashed subject is brightened.
