I like this layout. The photo makes it clear what the mag is about. The title is clear and readable but does not detract from the photo (this is important because people will identify with the new layout but want to see the shot. the title layout will work with most shots. There may be ones with a light area at the top and the font could switch to "outline" to make it stand out.
The other text is clear and concise.
A job well done - from a old guy with a degree is graphic design and eleven years experience in graphics before I went into IT (even then, I designed logos, newsletters, posters, flyers, etc.).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thanks John- I tried to seriously change the deficiencies of the first attempts at redesign and when I get it all together will send a copy on to my publisher for his review

I think this one "works". The additional text items were well-contained in the graphic shapes.

Much nicer Rob - great action image, the title stands out nicely, and the other subtitles well placed.. One thing bothers me though.. and maybe John will check back and chime in.. is the use of different fonts.. it looks like you've used at least 4 different fonts, plus all the different fonts displayed in the hockey image itself.. a general rule for web design is 3 fonts, 3 colors, 3 sizes..
In graphic design, some suggest 2's company, 3's a crowd.. you can add variety by using the same font but italicize or underline to stress attention..
