Night time football shooting.

What is the BEST way to take night pictures at a HS football game. I have been trying my hardest to get shots, and it's a very hard task. Our HS team is in the 3rd. round of the PLAYOFFS, and all I want to do is be able to get some great shots of this history. I love doing this for the boys, and I don't get paid. It's a great passion of mine. I have a Nikon D300 and a D90. I also have the Nikon 70 - 200 2.8 lens. Any help would be wonderful.

Thanks so much,
Roberta

That's a good job. Of course the best thing to have is fast lenses but they are expensive. Keep the ISO as high as possible without getting too much noise and keep the shutter speed as fast as you can.
Oh, and maybe a monopod if a tripod would create a danger to others.

Hint: I used admin access and edited your post and clicked on the INSERT button to get the image large. Just click that after you ADD the photo.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

looks like you already have the eye for the action, try ISO 1250, F2.8, and 1/400th sec on your shutter speed as a starting point and shoot in full manual- stay off of the "sport" program and you should do fine

Definitely stay at f/2.8 and shoot manual. And since you're shooting with a Nikon, you might even be able to get away with higher ISO so that you can use a faster shutter speed. If you can get somewhere close to 1/1000th sec., that would be tack sharp no matter how fast the action is.
