Bad Background

How can I adjust the background on this shot? I only had an instant to take the shot and the settings were definitely off but I love the drama playing out on the catamaran.

It looks as if you could extract the boat very easily, and put it on a wave or surf background. Might be an interesting exercise
Or, you could select the background, and try editing it on a separate layer to increase contrast and adjust brightness. :)

John has given you some great advice to follow but one other option is dodging and burning, I took the liberty of doing a quick burn on your photo hope you dont mind this is just to give you an idea of what it could look like, its a rough idea as I only took 2 mins to pull some detail back into it, I will delete it off my computer as soon as It is posted here.

I like the background. It works to make the boat POP out of the frame. The boat is the subject and you caught that beautifully. Backlit from the sun the dark image of the boat in sharp detail is contrasted really nice with the sun bleached bokeh of the background. :judge:  :woohoo:

I love this one. :watching:

I agree I don't think you want the boat competing with the busy background

I'm with Charles and "Pix". The muted background makes the boat "pop", exactly what you want. If I did anything, it would be a soften/blur the background but I think it works the way it is.

Part of composition is to get the focus on the subject. This is a form of good DoF.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thanks everyone!
I did extract the boat using a quick mask but found it a really difficult shot to do this with since there is so much detail at the water line. I also tried the dodge tool but I did not like the colors it brought out. I appreciate you giving it a try Photobod! I think I am going to print it as is and see how I like it. I'm so glad I was able to get the team and the hull out of the water!
