How to turn a snap shot into a pro portrait

I have several pictures of my children that I have taken. They are no where near professional quality, but is there any way I can turn these snapshots into professional quality portraits, that look like they were taken in a studio?

I have Adobe Elements.

There can obviously be some improvement with post processing. Whether is reaches professional status is objective. Even some professional shots can be improved upon.

Since I don't really know you yet, I'll pass on asking if your kids are ugly... jk

Post a few examples and I'm sure you can get some improvement tips.

You can polish them up in photo processing software, but what really makes a portrait look like studio work is the lighting. Mainly it needs to be something other than frontal lighting. This usually means the light source needs to be somewhere else than on the camera. If you have an external flash check out strobist.com . If not google "window light portraits" for easy tutorials. It's amazing what you can accomplish with decent window light, and maybe a DIY reflector. You can use anything white as a reflector: poster board, a towel, etc...

Thanks. Well the pictures I would like to "clean"up were just shots of my kids playing outside, but those right moments where they look at the camera. If I can't fix what I currently have, I'll work on future shots. :)

You may want to post a couple of them and ask for constructive critiques. I think you would be surprised at the good suggestions. No one's going to be overly critical but we have had folks copy down shots, work a little "magic" and report them with great success. We are here to help.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
