Traveling with your camera

12 years 9 months ago #112947 by omgosh6990
I'm going on vacation and I haven't flown with my DSLR before. I'm bringing a laptop backpack with my laptop and other essentials, but it's not really designed for a camera. I was thinking of several options:

1. Get a camera bag that can also hold my laptop
2. Get small body/lens specific containers that can fit in my existing backpack
3. Get a hardcase and send it through checked baggage

What do you folks use for traveling?

Well I would never put it in check baggage. It may get lost. I rather loose clothing instead of my camera.

I would prefer not too, but if there is no other way, I may have to put it in check baggage.

I have a Lowepro backpack and a Vanguard messenger bag that are for cameras and includes a slot for a laptop.

Check you homeowners about insuring your gear and remember that airlines are rsponsible for a limited amount for lost luggage.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thanks, I didn't know about airlines being responsible for lost luggage. I would assume so, but just because we assume doesn't mean it would be true.

Never ever check your cameras if you want to see them again.

Get the back pack camera bag that will hold a laptop and as Shadow said NEVER put your camera gear in checked baggage

Remember to engage brain before putting mouth in gear

I agree, never put anything of value in your checked luggage. Things are stolen out of them all the time and they toss the bags on top of one another. Get an appropiate bag that carries what you need on board.

The camera bag/aptop bag option makes sense. Not only will you be able to pack the lenses and other stuff you want, but you have some means of carrying it around when you are "touristimg" I do it frequently, and use a bag for travelling that fits in the overhead. I carry it aloing on top of a small rollaboard which holds other "essentials", and also fits in the overhead. Togetehr, they appear as one unit, and I always get them on without problems.

I had a great laptop/camera backpack for years that I really liked. But I may be alone here, I've grown less protective over my camera over the years and sometimes I just throw it in a regular sling bag or even in a non-padded backpack (I use my hoodie as padding around it or on the bottom).

Ever since I broke a couple lenses inside my "safely" padded backpack from a very short drop, I have lost all illusions of safety and just pick whatever bag I like and make sure to set it down carefully wherever I go. Haven't had a problem since.

And yes, for the millionth time, NEVER check your camera. A friend checked his external hard drive and hasn't heard or seen of it since. There is also that little pen in the zipper trick, even if you have the luggage locked. Airlines may say they'll cover it but really how do you prove the camera was in there in the first place?

Did you end up having any issues that you needed that for? I imagine if someone is gunna take your camera, they'll just go ahead and take your whole bag...
