Hand holding a 400mm lens?

12 years 8 months ago #133344 by Silver Fox
A friend of mine may be selling me his 400mm f/2.8 pretty cheap. Well compared to what he bought it for, it's a good deal. I was just wondering how can I hand hold this lens when out in the woods or places where tripod just won't cut it?

Use a monopod or brace it on a sturdy tree limb or other support. Not easy to handhold.

You better get a quality monopod cos you gonna need it.You might have to push up your iso/cut down on your f-stop if you want to hand hold it.
Lucky you on the great price, now do it justice.

My neighbor is a bird photographer and has one of those Bush hawk bracket things that you hold the camera to your chest. He showed me it once and it does help. Next time I see him I will ask to veryify the model. He uses it with a 500mm lens.

If you hand hold a big lens that big you need to go to at least 1/500 of a sec. 1/100 over the length of the lens

Maybe a monopod with a gimble might do the trick. If I like the lens I'm getting it for $3700. Right place, right time if you ask me.

The idea of the monopod is it takes the weight off of you, and helps balance the camera. You can also hold a slow SS if needed.

Anything that attaches to your body, isn't going to remove the weight. Just re-distribute it.

Ask anyone who has shot a few hours with a long lens from the sideline. They can tell you WHY it's the right tool to own. Your left arm will thank you.

I like, but how comfortable would that be?

They're extremely heavy. Fantastic optics though. Congrats, I hope you get it.

Get a good tripod and monopod setup for it. Gimbal head, the works. Also make sure you get a drop in polarizer..it'll save your life.

Don't those filters drop into place in the front of the lens?

That lens has VR right? So that lens with monopod and gimble head should be all good

If you go with the Bush Hawk make sure you get either their deluxe or professional kit. It will have everything you need. I have one, and glad I spent the extra money.
