Hood Help

I want to get a hood for my 18-55mm and I don't know what kind to buy, and what shape? What are they good for, because I hear they are useful.

hoods can do two things.

1) They will reduce lens flare when shooting in bright sunlight.

2) They protect the end of your lens from bumps.

Since your lens is a medium wide angle I would recommend a petal shaped lens hood to prevent vignetting in the corners, but a standard round lens hood will be better than none. Your local photo store should be able to help you find the correct one to fit your lens.

Nikon's website will give you the product code (or number). Seems it's the HB-45.

Talk about service. I was going add that you can get lots of information by searching ( www.photographytalk.com/forum/search ) using the word "hood". There have been a lot of threads about this very subject just in the past week.

Great fast response troops!

Remember that a lot of aftermarket hoods don't have flocking inside which is designed to reduce flare and control light...
