Houston Travel Photography: Family Fun Days in Hi-Town
Looking back on your Houston travel photography, you’ll be reminded how much you and your family felt welcomed, which is why the city is known as Hi-Town. Not only will you enjoy the many family attractions, but also the friendliness of the people during your family fun visit.
Start your Houston travel photography with a visit to the Houston Zoo, considered one of the best in the U.S. Your children will want to rush to the Zoo’s new African Forest to view chimpanzees, rhinos and many other animals as well as the opportunity to feed the giraffes. What a picture that will make! Just as compelling is the Natural Encounters exhibit with its close-up interactions with meerkats, tamarins and Asian small-clawed otters.
After a break for lunch, travel to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, one of the country’s most-visited museums. Filled with many amazing exhibits, the museum’s Paleontology Hall will thrill you children with its more than 30 dinosaurs, including the opportunity pet a dinosaur’s fossilized skin. Everyone in the family will also be mesmerized by the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Hundreds of butterflies in a spectacular three-story glass enclosure glide through a rainforest, and have been known to alight on visitors.
Make sure everyone reserves some energy for an incredible evening excursion on Buffalo Bayou to watch 250,000 bats take flight. Position your camera on the viewing deck next to the Waugh Drive Bridge to add sunset and twilight images of this daily event to your Houston travel photography.
Having seen dinosaurs, your children will be equally excited for the other subject that always catches their attention…space flight. Houston is home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center and its Space Center Houston. Your children’s reactions to the story of America’s journey into space will keep your camera clicking and fill your Houston travel photography album with memorable pictures.
For an afternoon of pure, unadulterated fun, visit Kemah Boardwalk on Galveston Bay. The Boardwalk’s 35 acres is filled with rides, arcade games and many great restaurants. You won’t be able to keep the kids off the 36-foot carousel or 65-foot Ferris wheel. For a true adventure and more opportunities for great Houston travel photography, take the high-speed boat ride across Galveston Bay.
When it’s time for a relaxing afternoon, spend it at Herman Park. It’s a beautiful, 445-acre urban park with plenty of space for play and picnics, plus an attractive rose garden and the serene Japanese Garden. The kids will love a ride on the miniature train and a pleasant journey across McGovern Lake in a pedal boat, watching the many birds.
Hi-Town has even more venues where you can capture family fun and visions of the natural world for your Houston travel photography. The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center has 5 miles of hiking trails into a quiet natural sanctuary. Spend some time at the Wildlife Garden, especially if you have a macro lens (or you can easily rent one for the day) to photograph the hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife that is attracted to the special selection of plant life there.
An even greater nature adventure for your Houston travel photography and an excellent learning experience for the whole family is the Armand Bayou Nature Center. It contains 2,500 acres of wetlands, forest, prairie and marsh habitats teeming with birds, mammals, reptiles and other animals. Hike or paddle through this beautifully preserved wilderness and bring the right lens for bird photography, as it is one of the best places to capture wonderful images of bird life.
For an even more interactive natural experience, make sure you schedule time to visit Moody Gardens on Galveston Island. The excitement will build as you approach this family-fun park and its three towering pyramids come into view. The Rainforest Pyramid recreates one of the world’s most amazing habitats, and the Pyramid doesn’t disappoint with its free-roaming monkeys, sloths, birds and tamarins. Visitors can walk through the rainforest at ground level and then experience the view from the canopy on the two-story trail. After a rainforest adventure, direct your kids to the 12-story Aquarium Pyramid where they can view a myriad of sea creatures from walkways that are positioned above and below the water line.
Hi-Town offers endless days of family fun and all the pictures to fill many memory cards with Houston travel photography.
