A Filter Question

Ok I am new to photography, but I am trying to learn all I can. So my questions is about filters. What is the purpose of a filter and how do you use them?

Filters have lots of uses.
Polarizing filters reduce glare.
Neutral density filers reduce the amount of light so you can use slower shutters.
Color filters change the way your camera sees the lighting.
UV and sky filters filter out a little "off" light but are usually used to protect the lens.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

To explain filters and what they do is difficult on here, as there are a multitude of filters to choose from, basically a filter is put on the front of your lens to alter something, that something is dependant on what filter you have attached, Baydream has covered a few but there are so many more, try this site it may help www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filters

You pretty much nailed it.

Vaseline is a good filter if you're photographing a particularly ugly person. Makes your lens sticky though.

THIS IS A JOKE!
