Best dslr camera for beginners?

6 years 10 months ago #528788 by James F
So I got asked today which was the best dslr camera for beginners if no budget was set.  Well then they quickly clarified under $1000 for body only.  I shared with them that creates a big gap.

I ended up recommending the Nikon D7300.  What would you have said?

Panasonic G85. Which only looks like a DSLR, actually has an EVF. Most beginners asking about their first DSLR are unaware of the mirrorless alternatives.

Have them look at the Canon Rebel series or Nikon D3300

You can get a new Nikon D3400 for $399.  And that includes 18-55mm kit lens.  That would make a great DSLR camera for beginner.

My answer would be something like: "One that they can handle and feel comfortable with". Although I am Canon myself I would recommend they visit a good retailer and look at different makes. It has to feel right/good, they have to come to terms with the menus etc.

Sony a6000, I know that's not a DSLR, but it's a great camera.

$1000 for body only will buy a camera that is far from being something for a beginner.  For that much, you can get a EX (excellent condition) Nikon D700 or Canon 5D Mark II from KEH

The best one is the one that feels the best when they hold it. They also need to like how it operates when it comes to making adjustments and menu diving. Almost any camera today has enough image quality for whatever you want to do. The main thing to consider is the lens availability. Pick the lens system and then pick the body.

"Best"is very subjective. What's "best" in my book may not be for another person. They need to learn more about photography before buying a camera...

Used, or better yet, refurbished, is a good way to keep costs down once you settle on a model. KEH will give you a 6 month warranty on their used models.
