"look at the handsome photographer peeps" usually gets a laugh as well.

I use a remote, count to 3, and start shooting at 2.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I usually use a variation of "1,2,3..." but "sneak" in some pictures while I'm counting and during the second or two after the official shot. The best expressions usually come from the sneaks. Having the camera on a tripod helps.

One piece of advice that I read from a pro, can't remember who or where, and that I have tried successfully myself, is to have everyone in the group close their eyes really tight. Tell them you will count 1,2,3 and to open their eyes on 3. Do that, wait one more count - a silent 4 - then take the shot.

Chris

I usually pick someone out of the crowd and ask them to turn around and not face the camera. This loosens up the rest of them, I assure the offended one he is fine and we get a happy shot!

I say the typical..."say cheese". I get several people who tell me no one says" cheese" anymore, then I'll come back with comment, that will get them to laugh...and there's my shot.

This would make a great "smile creator" IF the group has a sense of humor.
