Reasonably Priced Wide-Angle lens...

12 years 1 month ago #217393 by MagsWPhoto
So I have and 18-55 lens but it's just not really wide enough for some of the shots I wanna do. I was looking into wide angle or fish-eye lenses but they are out of my price range right now as I'm just starting up with weddings. Does anyone have suggestions for a cheaper option? I was looking at those screw-on attachments (I don't think they are Canon) but is the image quality good enough to bother or would it just be a waste of time and money?

Thanks!

It sounds to me like you might enjoy using a fast prime for your first fast lens I would recommend a "normal" lens. On a crop-body DSLR this would be something like a 35mm f2....sounds like you shoot canon so here's a link to Adorama for one, you might call customer service to make sure this is the right lens for your camera though.

Thanks! I'm a bit confused though, what would be the benefit of getting a 35mm as far as having a wider angle goes if I already have an 18-55?

The ability to shoot at f2 = the ability to shoot indoors in low light with out flash in most situations. Sometimes when you do events and weddings there will be a no-flash rule that you must abide by, also the image quality may be better than your 18-55mm. There is also an enormous difference artistically between shooting at f4 and f2.

That is basically what I was thinking...screw-on attachments would be a waste of money for weddings IMHO. As far as going wider, the cost goes up dramatically as you go wider in your lens choice.

I don't have much faith in the attachment type WA converters. Odd thing is, for crop bodies, it's the zoom WA lenses that are less expensive than the primes! Links to more thoughts on WA choices -

Good call Kelly, I totally missed the boat when I misread the OP.

Sorry about the confusion....

Thanks for the help! I understand about the f-stops. I have one that goes to f1.8 that I use sometimes so yea, I really am just looking for that wide-angle ability. Might just have to save up and wait it out then to get something good!

Keep an eye out for used lenses at KEH (link below), B&H and Adorama.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thanks that's a good idea but are used lenses reliable?
