Which is better: Lightroom or Aperture?

13 years 2 months ago #28731 by Hawkins
I'm just reading on both and it's hard to say which is better from a rookies stand point? Aperture looks like it might be easier to use out of the box. But I've always been a Adobe fan. So this is a tough one.

Thoughts please?

Lightroom.

I've tried both. Both are Ok, but I just like Lightroom more.

So, Lightroom.

Is there a need to have Photoshop if you own Lightroom (or the other way around?)

Photoshop does a lot more than Lightroom but Adobe doesn't include some LR features in PS so it can sell you both.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

For the every day photographer just messing around, would Lightroom be able to take care of all my needs?

For an everyday photographer just messing around, Google's free Picasa will work.

I do a lot of my non-RAW processing in Picasa. Give it a try and read/watch the tutorials on the www.picasa.com site. They provide most of what you need to know. Based on the detail they include, I doubt anyone would be able to sell a Picasa help book

Basically stores a catalog of your folders, allows you to create "albums" where you can reference the photos, create search-able tags, add geo-tags using Google Earth.
Your folders are untouched, just referenced. Did that answer your question?

Forgot to add. it does facial recognition and when you ID a face, it looks through your photos and asks about others that look similar. That has been about 95 % accurate. Then you can search by person.

K thanks for the information. Looks like an OK alternative for people who can't afford LR or Aperture.

BTW Aperture (and iPhoto) have that facial recognition thing too.

Thought they might,. My copy of Lightroom is getting some age on it (from 2007).

Just can't beat the price :) also includes 1 GB of storage on Piacasa Web for sharing.

You can get the online storage without the program too. I use it for all my online sharing (more serious pictures I put on flickr).
