Laptop review and Photoshop

13 years 2 months ago #29725 by Baydream
I was reading a review of a laptop I was considering. It has 6GB of memory. The review commented that Photoshop would only use 4GB of memory so the addl 2 would not speed processing. Has anyone heard, or know about, this? Just curious.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

When I upgraded last summer, I went from a 4gb lappie, running CS3 to a 12gb machine for my CS5. The new setup is a world faster, especially when I use the focus stacking, or do multi image HDR, etc. I like to believe it has something to do with the added ram.....B)

Why so serious?

Photoshop CS3 for Windows and Photoshop CS4 for Macintosh were 32-bit programs. That meant that the maximum RAM the program could address was 4 GB. With 64-bit software, the RAM limit is more than 18 billion GB. Of course, current hardware can’t hold that much RAM, but let’s just say the 64-bit software should suffice for some time. To run 64-bit software, one needs a 64-bit operating system, which means Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, Mac OS X Leopard, or Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I've ran cs3, 4 and 5 with 4 gigs of ram with 500 layer edits, fine.

CS5 should be better now you've upped you RAM, you should change your performance settings to use more RAM.

If you haven't done so already that is. ;)
