How did you come up with your business name?

I'm just curious on how did you all come up with your business name. Did you hire someone or firm? I don't want to use my name and can't seem to come up with anything that has a matching URL available?

Years ago I was in advertising and had to come up with several company names. One basic "rule" was that the name be easy to spell if you heard it and easy to pronounce if you read it. I also had to create logos for the companies.
For one of the companies, the management team sat down for an old fashioned brainstorming session. We "threw out" names and someone recorded them. Then we discussed them and narrowed the choices down to about five. I then designed logos and the one that "popped" was chosen.
Maybe gather some friends and brainstorm for names that fit the type of business you want to start.
Another idea would be to go to a university or community college that offers design and ask the professor/instructor if they would accept the task as a practice project.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I thought up a common word - in my case Backyard and then added another word to come up with a range of different URLs we use for different functions. The URLs were all available (at least at the time I was reserving them a couple of years back)

So I ended up with:
BackyardSilver - making money from photography
BackyardImage - my fine art photography
BackyardArtisan - my wife's jewelry business
BackyardBengal - not sure I use it now, but it was a cat photo site originally
BackyardJewellery - don't use this one any longer

In my case, it was all to do with things you do from home, so perhaps you can think of a similar combination that means something to you.

My husband, Don and I are starting our own business. He is a handyman and I sew. Since both our names start with D, we decided on 2 D's Enterprises. Short, easy to remember and unusual here in FL.

I also did a fictitious name search to see how unique ours is. :)

I enjoy shooting nature and everything outdoors. I found that nature is from the latin word natura, so that's what I went with, Natura Photography. For me it's not a business but something I enjoy. I love sharing my photos with family and friends and even set up a Facebook page to share as well.

My wife and I were discussing what I should call my business, when I first got my latest camera and decided to use it to build a business. I didn't really want to just use my name, and I had a number of ideas that were already taken, or at least the domain names were already taken, so a website would be hard to find. When I'd just about given up and decided to just use my name, my wife reminded me of my geeky nature, and my favorite show. After a quick search for the domain name for a website, and for Facebook pages, BlueBox Photography was born, almost out of a joke. But, it works for me. Don't be afraid to have a little fun with the name, and definitely try to make it something easy to remember.

This is kinda funny. My ex was in construction and was always bringing wood home and leaving them piled all over the house (grrr). So one day the pile behind the couch came up over the top of it and I lost it.. why is there all this wood around here? He responds, "I'm Gunoo make shelves with it." So it became a joke around our house.. the Gunoo piles. One day I decided I was Gunoo start a photography business and now there is Gunoos Studio.

I started out with only my initials, but when you said it out loud, your tongue got tied. So now I use my name. I tried coming up with other ideas and they all felt forced and weird. Or they had been taken on the web. I am a minimal retoucher and the front runner was simply natural photography (and there are a bunch of those) but that was taken either on facebook or the web. I also had to make sure I didn't have the same name as another business in the state I live in.

If anyone has some good ideas for a business name I am all ears :)

When looking up a potential domain name for your website, make sure to use really generic domain name checker websites. Do not use sites like GoDaddy.... if you search for the name on their site more than once, they see a demand and buy that domain. Then you have to pay a premium price for it. Smart for them, but sucks for you. Hope this helps!
