trying out the reverse grad filter

two shots from last night, i can't decide which i prefer, thoughts?
c&c appreciated

i got a chance to try out my new reverse grad filter, which was awesome because, as we all know, at sunset the brightest part of the sky is on the horizon.

I'm divided. I like the sky and water colors in #2 better. But I also prefer the rock colors and beach feature of #1.

So how does a "reverse" grad filter differ from a normal grad filter?

on the right is an example of a reverse grad, in comparison to a normal graduated filter, which will sometimes cause the top of your sky to underexpose a little to much

These are both great! Nice use of that filter, you controlled the sunset and exposed the whole photo beautifully.

If I had to pick a favorite, I think it would be the first. I like the variety of rocks and the colors they bring to the photo.

I had not seen one of those. The results are fantastic.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Yikes! I'd think that hard cutoff in the middle of the reverse grad would be tough to deal with. This is the kind of thing that could push me into HDR.

Both very nicely shot! I prefer the first. I think the rocks in #2 are a bit obtrusive.

its funny because when i was in school, i was totally against filters. i always figured if i could do it easily in photoshop why bother.
but now that i've been using them, i find that the result is a lot more realistic then hdr... and once you get used to the filters, it becomes like second nature

Heh! It's all too easy to be "more realistic" than HDR!
