, John. I found that Sweet Gum trees don't grow any farther north than NJ. The photo does appear to be seed pods from a member of the burdock family, sometimes used as an herbal medicine.There are many varieties of burdock all over the world.
I read that the burdock seed pod was the inspiration for velcro.
