depth of field

3 years 6 months ago #698797 by serhiko
I was shooting a flower in field conditions and it was a bit dark for a normal f-stop, so i tried to shoot it at f\2.8.
After a few shots (about 30-40) i found a nice effect with the depth of field that shallow, and though i didn't manage to get the center in focus it came out nice i think.

The question is how far artistically can you go from the normal perception of the focus and still get a good result?

I never heard that before "normal ƒ stop"!
A ƒ stop is just an other shooting option, parameter in the arsenal.
It may be used for documenting or for inspirational purposes. As
such, there is no normal.

That word again!

It is a matter of creative intent, of good taste, of artistic imagery
and of communication — is it the subject's real appearance you
want to emphasise (documentation) or YOUR perception of it
(inspiration)?

Maybe these will help you:

I'll second what was already said. There is no normal, and IMO "good" is how close you came to fulfilling your artistic intent (thus someone else can't put that label on your work - only you can). And, don't get me wrong, there are "standards" and known ways of pleasing your viewer's eyes. But, that's the beauty of art. You are free to do as your heart desires. I also firmly believe that you shouldn't ever set a goal of pleasing someone else with your art. Do what makes you happy and if others like it, that's icing on the cake.

This piece has a dreamy feel due to your technical choices. If that's what you were trying to do, then you nailed it.

We personally grow in tough times.
Our photography grows in difficult situations.
I am glad you started playing with the aperture in the low light.
That is how we grow as photographers.
