This is the only one I've ever shot. Tough little buggers to catch. I admire folks who get great shots of hummers. It's not easy.

It is tough to get them. You play a balance game with shutter speed between getting the wings "stopped" or blurred just enough so that you see them but also show motion. Looking through my shots, 1/400 seems to be about the minimum to "see " the blur of wings, 1/2000 can usually "stop" the wings. At time, when they are landing, a slower speed is possible.

Your shot is beautiful.

I have been chasing these buggars for weeks now...my wish? To catch the fight in mid air...they are certainly fiesty and guard the feeder non-stop. Great capture, color is awesome.

For those who want to capture these remarkable little creatures, here is my "method".

I set my camera on a tripod, select my shutter speed, aim at a spot just off the feeder and (here's the tricky part), pre-focus on the most likely spot where the HB will be approaching the feeder. Then move away and use a remote shutter release to fire when it gets into your pre-selected area.

To get very fast shutter speeds, you will be using a large aperture (narrow DoF), so experiment with longer zooms. This one was using my 70-300, ISO 400, F/5, 1/2000 to "stop" the wings, A slower speed and smaller aperture will give the wings more "motion blur" and give you bit more DoF wiggle room.
