4 Waterfalls With Slow Exposures

12 years 6 months ago #153520 by Alex
So we had the chance to go mountain biking today. Finally got the chance to use my Cotton Carrier and have to say this thing was awesome! I'll be talking about that in more detail in a later thread. We recently had some rain so the small creeks in Trabuco Canyon were flowing with small waterfalls all over the place. I went there with just my camera, lens and polarized filter. In all these shots I dropped my ISO as far down as I could go, closed the aperture as small as I could get it and was able to get shutter speeds between 2 and 10 seconds. Post processing was done in Photoshop CS5 and Nik Software's Viveza 2

Let me know what you think.

ISO 100 | 24mm | f/16 | 3 second shutter

ISO 100 | 24mm | f/16 | 10 second shutter

ISO 100 | 24mm | f/16 | 2 second shutter

ISO 100 | 24mm | f/16 | 2.5 second shutter

Like the first pic. But if it were me I would crop the competing greenery from the right side of the pic so just a little green shows. I'm funny that way. 2nd and 3rd pics have the white spots of sunlight. I don't have the skills to darken it but I know you do!! Like the last picture best!!!! Is it alright if I tell my friends I took it??!! This is all from an amatures point of view. One day I to will have excellent pictures.:woohoo:

Good finds. That last ones is wonderful. Shooting waterfalls when the sun is directly on the water is a bear (an real HDR challenge).
The CC is a great tool for that type of travel.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I'm always a big fan of slow-shutter waterfall shots.

Unfortunately when I find them there's usually a lot of sunlight. Wouldn't it be nice to stumble across these just before sunrise?

Great series Alex, sounds like a plan to return after a heavy rain and see what else you can get

The first ones look like they're extremely tiny (are they?)

the last one is the best IMHO.

A tricky subject in deed, yet if handled right it's a wonderful effect.

1) choose a earlier/later time or heavy overcast day.
(this wont blow your whites out so much)
2) tripod or some steady support .... always
3) 1/2 sec. or there about is fine
4) zoom in and crop in-camera .... fill the frame with the subject!

I see a nice little composition in 2 & 3 but I am squinting to see them.
Move in closer & bracket .... take lots of (over/under) exposures.

I like the first one best, the waterfall hitting the pool looks like a star, your eyes are immediately drawn to that, then you pan back & see the detail of the tree. I like the little bit of green as it gives a good tonal range. They are all good, but I'd crop the last one as for me, it's a bit light at the very top of the fall, and I find the rock detail at the bottom distracting.

However, I do not mean to criticise, as photography is objective, in the eye of the viewer - great work Alex! :)

You have captured the beauty in all of them but the last one catches my eye the most. :D
