Saw these guys at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, CA last weekend.

I like 3,4 and 5 the best. Be careful with your backgrounds. Try to look thru your shot / subject to see what is in the background. Sometimes you can take a step in one direction and change the entire image. Love the sharpness of the last couple of birds! B)

Thanks. I haven't tried shooting birds before, and these were kind of a challenge. Every time I got an angle with their eyes visible they seemed to move before I could even focus! And the place (Fisherman's Wharf) was so crowded that I knew I wouldn't be able to get many shots without something or someone distracting in the background. I decided I'd have to just get as much background blur as I could and live with it...

I was able to get a slightly less distracting background on this one, by shooting up at the sky -- the only place that wasn't cluttered with a crowd of people! But I accidentally underexposed the shot, and by the time I brought out enough detail, I was pretty disappointed with the noise. It's composed a bit better, but I just don't like the overall image quality.

The cockatoo shots have haloing... I guess you need to work on them a little more. or something.

NIce pics though.

Yeah, the cockatoo shots were severely underexposed. I had accidentally hit the adjustment wheel on the back of my camera while moving around trying to get their eyes visible every time they moved. I was in AV mode with a Canon body, so by turning that wheel it changed my exposure compensation. I think these were shot at -1.3 or so. I'll try to do some careful dodging and burning and maybe lighten the sky a bit to reduce that haloing. Thanks for pointing it out.
