Good colorful choice of subject but it appears the focus point in on the beach behind the birds. That spot is in the center of the frame. You may need to aim at the eye, press the shutter half way to lock the focus, then frame your photo and complete the shutter press. In almost every wildlife shot, the focus should be on the eye.Keep shooting. This was oh so close.
