:agree: about the focus. I wish I could be sure of that when I am taking photo but photos show up better on computer than on camera but I need to practice more with the new telephoto lens.

You don't list your camera on your profile, so I don't know what controls you have available. If you do have an Autofocus Lock option, either through a button or with Half-shutter press, then frame your subject and focus by half pressing the shutter, and lock focus by holding it there until you have reframed the shot for the composition you want , then pressing fully to take the shot. Be sure your focus mode is not set to "Continuous" or the focus will change to the center spot when you expose, and the image won't be sharp. Read the manual...:)

Thank you. Composition is what I have been trying to work on lately. But also need to work on focus. any Ideas how to control my unsteady hand. tripod isn't always and option especially when I see something while driving and pull off the road to take picture of.

John, camera is Canon EOS Rebel

k I put lens on auto focus pressed button half way let it focus in and this is what I got

then when I put on manual focus I get this

not sure why looks worse with AF other than no control over shutter speed on AF

The last couple of samples look more like a camera shake issue than a focus issue. Make sure your shutter speed is at least equal to your focal length and it might help! And I think with a crop sensor you may want to go even faster...not sure if it's necessary since the telephoto I used with my rebel has IS. But figure out the actual focal length and try basing your shutter speed on that (e.g., zoomed to 200mm, your actual focal length is 320mm, so shoot at 1/320 or faster). Hope that helps. :)
