The Moon and The Flag

12 years 4 weeks ago #217009 by Joiemagic
Was trying something different... I think it would have been better with the moon in focus and the flag slightly out of focus... was having trouble focusing on the moon though... It was so small in the viewfinder... This was cropped down a lot. I think I have just enough flag in it.

If the moon is not in focus when you set your focus to infinity, then the lens may need to be calibrated.

It's hard to see the flag for what it is at the same time you're capturing the moon.

Perhaps it's just better to go with the symbolism of the two together more in silhouette.

what would happen if you used a fill flash?

I actually did use fill flash when taking the shot, but when I made the adjustments originally to bring out the detail in the moon, it darkened the flag. Here is something a little closer to what I captured. Without the flash, you could not even see the flag because I was underexposing for the moon. Would have had more shots, but I ran downstairs without extra batteries for the flash.

What do you think now... More comments/critiques are welcomed....

You had a few options here. The burn tool could have selectively darkened the moon - or you could have cloned the darkened moon over from another copy. The ragged edge of the lit flag adds something to the image - I'm not sure it is a positive element or not - a case could be made either way.
