Curlew.

Some shots of the many Curlews we get along our stretch of coast during the autumn and winter.

Really fun to watch waders .... When I saw your post my first thought was ... "they have curlews in the UK in the summer"? They (for the most part) head far north this time of yesr in North America ...... of course some hang around all year, but not many. Then I read your post ... all was explained

Fine series of images

Not often seen with their beaks open like that, great shots and looks like you got quite close too.
The ones in this area are really easily spooked, I am lucky to get within 50 yards of one.

These are great shots. I have tried to capture these but have had no luck, I can never get close enough.

Thanks, Bhowdy. The Curlews round these parts are resident. Come the spring they move up into the surrounding hills and mountains to breed and then make their way back down round the end of summer.

Thankfully we have good numbers round these parts. If you to head up into the hills today all you can hear is the sound of Curlews calling.

They are the only times I have seen them with their beaks open. At one point I thought they were going to regurgitate. We seem to be quite lucky with our Curlews as they seem to be used to us. Saying that they aren't too slow in making a noisy getaway if you get too close. Sometimes I can get within about fifteen feet of them.

Thanks. I have found that if you don't make eye contact with them they will stand their ground but soon as you raise the camera they are off. Sometimes they will carry on as if you aren't there though especially at high tide.

Nice shots.

In the third shot, I wonder whether or how you edited to make the bird the focal point, given that he would be pretty well camouflaged in that setting.

Thanks, Pinoldy. No editing done on the third pic apart from a bit of contrast added and sharpening. I was lucky with how the low sun was shining on the bird from behind and getting the catchlight in the eye. I think it was this that made the bird stand out so well from the rocks.

Great shots of a bird I've never seen in the wild. Thanks for posting!
