7 years 5 months ago #506871 by bryanpereira
Had a lucky trip and got to see 5 leopards in a week, usually I see 1 or 2.
Shot with a 200-500 and a D810 I have some of this one with a kill, ill post those another time.

That lens is getting some use.  Fan of the last photos and digging these as well.  How often are you getting over to Africa?

yes just checked out of interest - around 500 out of 5000 shots on my last trip, I go twice a year sometimes 3 times if I have guests wanting to go in the summer (not my favorite time for photography)

These are great.  Africa is so vast (literally) in photo opportunities.  You captured the magic here.

You look so close.  Are these animals curious about you when you are there?  Will they walk up to you?

One cheetah family will walk up to me and climb all over the van, lions will walk up to the vehicle but just to get to the other side. leopards are very shy, they tend not to come close. This one was across a small stream (I was parked in the middle of the stream) and up in a tree, so I wasnt that close

During those situations, that has got to get your blood flow going.  For me it would be to have the opportunity to be so close to a beautiful animal like this.

It does, i see something new every day but Ive been doing it for close to 40 years now, so im able to put that aside a little and focus less on the moment and more on capturing it photographically the best way possible (if that makes sense)

Does it?
No, but it should.

Are you able to get close during these cats during their hunting?

That would most likely give the animal away to its prey and cause it to miss a meal so we keep our distance at those times and shoot from a far. After the kill we can move in for some close eating shots. Leopards mostly hunt their big prey in total darkness, lions often as well although you will have more luck seeing a lion kill. Last year I saw 2 lion kills, a cheetah kill from start to finish and a leopard on the prowl, the leopard required me shooting at 20,000 iso! it was great to see I wrote about it here: www.exposuretours.com/wildlife-at-20000-iso/
