Guidance Photographing Birds?
Unless the bird is sitting still, you need a fairly fast shutter. I have shot hummingbirds with everywhere from 1/200 to 1/2500 of a sec. Get as close as you can.
I got some of my best shots by using a tripod, pre-focusing on a feeder and using a remote shutter release (Zap-Shot for Canon), then shooting from inside or just away from the feeder. After a few shutter clicks, they get used to it and act naturally.
Then again, sometimes a second camera comes in handy.
