Question about using a circular polarizer and the camera's TTL metering?

12 years 10 months ago #103796 by Kitzmiller
I was just playing around with a polarized filter on my camera today and just took the filter off and the camera is showing that I'm 2 stops off. Is using a polarized filter really that big of difference? The lighting hasn't changed. I have a D7000 and was wondering do all camera's meter the same?

Yes -- 2 stops compensation is about the average for a polarizer..

I was just about ready to go and mow the lawn, and nearly forgot I had this post here. 2 stops really? I thought there was something wrong with my camera! Good to know. Does that vary based on where you have the filter adjusted?

:agree: All the polarizing filters I've used, linear and circular, block 1.5 to 2.5 stops.

Sounds about right, I think 2.5 is on the high side. What polarized filter you have?

Nikon D90 & D40 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 35mm, 50mm, 105mm, SB600

It depends what the camera is pointed at. I don't see any change in the meter reading as the filter is rotated when pointed at a scene of mostly foliage. If I point it at the blue sky though, there is more change in the meter reading as I turn the filter.

The Hoya filters I use on my DSLRs block just under 2 stops. The Rollei brand filter I use on my Rolleiflex blocks just under 2.5 stops.

That brings up a good question, are all polarized filters pretty much the same as far as how they cut down on light?

The contemporary Tiffen and Hoya circular polarizers I've used on my DSLRs seem pretty much the same: somewhere between 1.66 and 2 stops. I have a variety of linear polarizers that came with various classic cameras, and I have noticed variation among them.
