I've been asked to photograph wedding in Houston TX... I'm from NY

So a friend of a friend is getting married in Houston TX and has asked me to shoot the wedding. There are suppose to be nearly 200 people. They have agreed to pay for my flight, hotel and normal rate for my services. What I was wondering, seeing this is my first time to travel so far for a wedding shoot, would you normally charge extra for something like this?

Nope I wouldn't charge extra. If they agree to pay for everything...flight, hotel and your normal rate....I think that is good. Don't be greedy. All you have to fork out is car rental, and food. You could ask me to pay for the car rental (if you really didn't want to pay for it yourself). I am sure you will be renting a car, even if the hotel you are staying at is where the wedding/reception is. You will still need a way to get around.

:agree: with Crystal. I would have complete expenses paid which would include car rental and perhaps a food budget.

I have only once photographed a wedding out of state and the bride/groom mention they would pay for all expenses (before I could even speak a word about it). So the decision is really up to you, you could ask for all expenses paid and hope they are OK with it. Or asking for all expenses paid, could push that button a little too far, to the point you no longer have a job.

You could tell them everything sounds good except for being able to get around if you needed to.. and then ask if they could let you use one of their cars while you're in town.. you're not asking for any more money which shouldn't offend them and they will probably see the logic in the request and either lend you a car or offer to pay for a rental..
It sounds like money isn't an issue with them but you don't want to beat a friend up over it either.. Go enjoy a mini-vacation and make some money doing it..

If it's a friend, just make sure they give you drink coupons for the reception  :beerbang:

Charge what you need to charge.

An out of town wedding limits you to one wedding that weekend. In June or October or other popular seasons I'd have to take that into account.

Do you want to go to Houston? Do you have people to hang out with or things to do? If I'm excited about the location I may be willing to cut a deal. Personally I'm charging regular rates for Houston. Meaning I'm charging something for the time I have to spend traveling and hanging out in a hotel room.

I've found combining work and travel can be quite exhausting. It's not a vacation unless you can add enough time to make the switch from working to leisure. That's hard to do for short trips. Destination wedding in Hawaii or Florida? I'll figure out a way to plan an extended stay and bring my family. Most places I'm probably flying in, shooting the wedding, heading home soon, and charging a reasonable amount for all the extra time and effort required compared to an in-town wedding.
