Have you ever done this?

I went out the other evening to shoot, with the idea of not giving a crap!.. I gotta tell you, it was refreshing. I'm always so concerned with composition, settings, etc.. It was very refreshing to go out, and just not care..

Anyone else shoot without worrying about settings?

I generally don't "worry" about settings as I usually know what I want to produce and what settings will produce the look that I want. And yes sometimes it turns out like crap anyway, sometime I'm right too

I'm at the point where I am half/half. Either I am thinking too much about the settings, as I'm still trying to learn them. Or I just snap away,...not for the simple of not giving a crap but more because I forget altogether about what should be my correct settings/composition etc..

I think it's a good idea to go out and just have fun some times. Camera settings and composition long ago became subconscious activity for me, but I definitely have different attitudes and goals with different shooting sessions. It's easy for me to get caught up in trying to create and/or find the perfect shot, and start skipping shots that I don't think will sell or don't have some sort of purpose. I have to remind myself that it's not always about trying to create a masterpiece. Sometimes it's just supposed to be fun family snaps, or a casual photo-walk having fun exploring the world with my camera like when I first got hooked. I try to think of it like a sketch book. It's rare that finished work comes out of the casual shooting sessions, but sometimes I stumble on to new ideas and inspiration.

I shoot casually all the time. Even when I am on an assignment to shoot a specific subject I always take time to shoot something interesting.

I am still learning about settings and paring and it can become frusterating and confusing at times. :S Sometimes you just gotta get into the " I dont care " mood and actual learn more techniques and skills. No artists got where they are by following the dotted lines all the time.;)

I agree with all of the above. My take-anywhere camera is a Fuji HS10 and is essentially a PAS in an SLR body. For the most part, I just have it set on Shutter priority so, when I see something of interest, and don't have time to "set up the shot," it's basically ready to go as soon as it powers up.

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

Sometimes I do but then I usually get inspired by something.
