Why do they say full frame is better than cropped?

"Reach" is a term used to describe the apparent length of a given lens fellas.

Yes, you're gonna get the same amount of perspective distortion because you're the same distance from the subject. It's like using the middle of the image.

Thing is it's exactly the same as having a lens of a longer focal length.

Here's why: I stand (say) 100m from subject B. The perspective distortion will remain the same relative to the background no matter what lens I use. 14mm or 1200mm it will be the same perspective distortion. If I use a 100mm lens and put it on a crop body. I'll be using the middle part of that lens. Basically cutting off the sides.

Thing is, my resolution will remain large because I don't need to crop down from a FF image. Sure if I use say a 24MP camera I can crop down to crop camera sizes and still retain a decent resolution too. So that's even less of an "advantage" of a crop camera.

Like Scotty said: "Reach" and focal length are two different things.

The small chips are designed to work well within their size limits (with the maximum number of pixels). Cropping a larger "format" chip will be just that... a crop. So, there is a difference between using an ASP-C chipped body compared to using the DX setting on a Nikon body (eg. a crop).

Scotty, it's a question of format. I simply used the extremes to make a point.

Matthew :)

Yes the difference is more details and better low life performance (using a FF "Crop"). Which is why I suggested it's better cropping from FF (given enough initial resolution)

I did say before a FF would get a shallower DOF too, but this isn't true. FF cameras get shallower DOF because FF makes you adjust your distance to the subject. If you're just cropping a FF image, it will be the same as a crop camera's image (but with less noise etc.).
