Rules about using PhotoShop

I want to start entering some photography shows. What's the rule - or rules - when you've use PhotoShop to make your pictures look better? Do you have to tell the show organizers that you've used PhotoShop? What about if you've made the photograph something totally different but it still looks "straight"?

unless it states in the rules of any comp that all details of your photo must be revealed then you dont have to tell anyone anything, althouigh most judges can tell if a photo has been manipulate or not

Cooke's got it about right. Many will state what is allowed though it is often pretty liberal. I read the Nat Geo entry rules recently and was surprised how much manipulation was allowed.

I have found rules are always stated. Usually they don't want a really bad photoshopped picture.

Agreed.

I don't disagree with anything that's been said here so far. One point of interest, I've recently entered a couple of shows that actually now have a category for manipulated photos. Photos with a lot of filter work, curves adjustments, etc. - that is, those that obviously are not "straight" shots fit into this manipulated category.

If you have any questions, make sure you get them answered before you pay any entry fees.
