Graduation photo.

I consider myself a advanced amateur photographer, not quite good enough to go pro..Yet. But, I just received back my daughters “professionally” taken picture by a picture taker from the Salt Lake City area (notice, I didn’t say photographer). Now it looked as though this picture taker had nice equipment , at a distance my guess a Canon 5d-m2, a 16-35 F2.8L and off camera flash and most importantly position at the event.
Folks this image is gawd awful, as in I could have taken better with my old 350D and kit lens and a bare light bulb, seriously I wish I could post the result.
My questions..
How do Photographers separate themselves from picture takers?
And
When is good enough, good enough acceptable?

There isnt anything a photographer can do to seperate themselves from as you call them picture takers other than continue to put out quality work, it is the only answer, there are a lot of people out there who buy themselves a top notch camera and believe the camera does the work, problem is if you choose to be a people photographer you have to be a people person and that shows in your results.

Doesn't matter what most think, if you get only one that will pay enough for crummy stuff, you have a pro photog. Marketing is a key.........

Why so serious?

There are plenty of those out there. I've seen the results first hand. The problem is they are too stupid to know they suck so they keep doing it. I've had people ask me if I could fix the photos they received. I tell them no I can't. It's someone elses image. Maybe next time they will think the photographer is a little more important.

I live in a college town, and have been approached for graduation photography. I quote a bargain price, and they say it's too expensive. Probably a case of you get what you pay for. It would be sort of crazy to hire a photog without seeing a portfolio. Unless the photog is also a con artist, the client saw examples of their work, and decided it was worth the fee.

Thanks for your thoughts. I guess it is what it is and my best option is to build my kit back up to where it was ( sold to buy my house at a great time) and provide my own “other” options.
Thank You for the welcome Charles.

There are always people out there with decent equipment who will offer low prices and people who are gullible enough to hire them without references and/or portfolio. It happens in remodeling, auto repair, web design, for-profit schools and so many other activities. The results can be disastrous (just watch "Holmes on Homes" on HGTV to see how bad it can get). The sad part of this is that it puts a damper on a once-in-a-lifetime event, like graduations and weddings (well some have multiples of those).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
